Well Annie has gone & got herself productive on other things and she has given me back the keys to the ute (“the pick-up”, if you’re one of our American friends)

So I am left wondering where to go for my first drive. I could go downtown on some practical internet marketing mission or I could wander off into the scenic wilderness of cyberspace, on a Quest to discover something deep, meaningful and ultimately useful.

I like Quest’s …

So where to begin.

There is a lot of talk about authentic marketing, I know, we started it more than 3 years ago, but what does it really mean to be authentic?

To give you a background, I left the mainstream world in 1999 off on a personal quest to discover the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything. During that journey I came to understand and experience a lot of things about energy and about how we create and un-create our lives.

Everything is energy, this is a scientific fact. Deeper into that, like people and places, businesses also have an energy you might call it a vibe or a feeling. That vibe or feeling we get about a business is its most important asset and comes from several places.

Like a child, a business will have had an inspiration a first moment of conception, a seed or kernel that will contain the idea or possibility that is a business. Did that inspiration come from a desire to be of service, a desire to create a better widget, a desire just to make money or maybe a genuine place of interest or enthusiasm?

This is the first & most important question to ask yourself. What is the root of the tree that is your business?

Next it will be influenced by the people involved, the core group of players that are nurturing the tree to life and growth. Then the people you bring in to work with you, either as partners, employees, web designers or external contractors. The imagery the logo’s the furniture the building, and on and on .. (You get the picture).

Each and every piece of your business comes together to create an energy or entity that is a business, and your business is a reflection of the core, the inspiration, the conscious and the unconscious. That energy or vibe, we all feel to varying degrees, wether we know it consciously or not, it is this energy that will mean success or failure.

Sadly what I have seen in the last 30 years in the area of marketing & modern business is that the root or the core energy of a business gets lost or forgotten in the rush for profits or expansion. That is why we are now seeing major players in trouble and issues like the Global Financial Crisis.

What’s worse is that in recent times, major and minor marketing companies are jumping on the back of the shift in awareness and hijacking it in the rush for a new idea or an “Edge”. What happens is that some people take on the concept of “Authentic Marketing” but they do it with their head, so it is not real, they see it as a tool or a clever marketing trick.

I can tell you that you cannot fake authenticity, it does not work like that, authenticity does not come from your head and it is not just an idea, it is soooo much deeper than that.

I often hear business people scoff at many “New Thought” ideas and concepts, but let me assure you if you do it properly and in integrity with yourself (as a business leader) it works.

My current poster child for this is my good friend Tony Oliver of www.sacredskin.com.au . Tony currently runs two very successful Tattoo Studios and has online business selling Swashdrive tattoo machines www.qualitytattoomachines.com , he has become so successful, that he has to open a 3rd studio. Tony has done this in a downturned market in an industry that most people might consider a luxury item.

His website traffic is growing daily, his statistics are enough to make any web developer or online entrepreneur shine with pride. (that’s why I am telling you his story)

How as he done it?

He has done it by ensuring every step is in alignment with his core values and his vision for his business and his life, and I don’t mean ideas in his head.

Authenticity is not a mental idea, it is not a concept or clever tool it is a genuine place of really understanding yourself and what motivates you at the deepest levels.

You cannot “do” authentic you have to “be” authentic, even when it is not comfortable.

To get there you have to peel away the layers of inner noise, the should’s and should nots, to discover that which genuinely sets you apart from the herd. Then you have to have the courage and the willingness to expose that aspect of yourself, take the steps and follow that energy for all it is worth.

How do you do that? ….. well that’s another post.

Stay Shiny
Samyo

Have you ever wondered why blogs hold Blogging Contests?

One of the best reasons is that they can result in amazing Win/Win for both the host blog and the entrant bloggers in so many important ways!!

Both blogs/sites will as a result of hosting and entering the contest boost traffic, readership, and backlinks to their websites and create more excitement and promotion opportunties through the generated extra marketing involved. Add to this that winning the Guest Blogging Contest means that you will have the opportunity to guest blog with links and full attribution back to you and your blog every time you guest post!

Here’s a list of the main reasons for entering blogging contests and winning of course:

Increase in traffic to both blogs

Increase in comments on both blogs

Increase in subscribers in both blogs

Huge increase in backlinks to both blogs

Shared more often

Excitement generated

More mentions and followers on social media

Now that has to be worth the time it takes to enter and create a really great post, link it to the host blog and promote the contest and your entry with gusto for a couple of weeks. The result could be a sky-rocketing of your blog stats and your brand awareness right throughout social media and the blog-a-sphere!

They do mean more work for the host who will have to check their blog and social media stream daily so that they can respond to all the new backlinks, hashtags, comments and mentions and usually every backlink coming from an entry post is reciprocated via the host blog in another post on their blog so it is a lot of work. The results can be amazing and the work well worth every minute for all the reasons described above.

Blog contests can be found all over the web and some are held regularly, however I love to find the new and once-in-a-while bloggin contests as I have a much bigger chanced of winning it. The latest blogging contest I am entering is the Culgoa Point Resort – Guest Blogging Contest and it is so easy to enter:

just post an appropriate post on a range of subjects based around Noosa Heads where the resort is based or about the competition itself and link to the blog or the post about the contest in your post which is exactly what I am doing here.

So if you’re ready to make a huge difference to your marketing for your blog today, why not head on over by clicking on the link above, read the rules and how to enter and enter yourself? Too easy!!

Well do you?

By this I mean a plan for your business? a plan for your website? a plan for your marketing? for your social media?

Planning means you get to take in both the big picture and the smaller steps it takes to achieve those long term goals, it also allows you to track your success!

Creating a plan for a business means knowing where your going by creating your vision and mission statements, have you done yours? Your vision and mission statements don't have to be on display to anyone, however they servce as a reminder to you about why you are in business, and as a road map to where your business is going.

A website plan is so important, we so often have people who come to us with no plan at all, we love to know your branding colours, taglines and branding statements – you do have branding don't you? Your vision also helps us to create the design that reflects your vision and passion out into the world. Know what you like not necessarily what you want, as your website designer can often come up with something far more amazing than you could dream yourself. However some very important things you must know about your website and structure into your plans are what you want your website to do!

Your marketing plan can include all your marketing, your branding statements and colours, your taglines, your marketing statements and words to use when marketing and it can include your where's as well. Where are you going to market? Where can you get the most bang or BUZZ for your buck? This takes research.

Your social marketing plan can be included within your larger marketing plan, however it also need to have planning in and of itself. Which social sites and types of site you will use, why you are going to use those, how often and how much time you will spend. Will you have a social marketing manager? Will you do it yourself? Where you will get the training you need to use social media efficiently.

Planning must of course include targets, goals and accountability. How else will you know whether you are on course and whether you are being sucessfull?

Make some plan and put them down on paper, draw up a mindmap of how all these plan fit together and help make you successful, then put the mindmap and your vison and mision statements up where you can see them every day.

Do you have a Facebook Page?

You would be seeing your Facebook Page Stats in the left-hand column under your profile image and you would recently be receiving this information via email from Facebook, a new innovation – very handy and thank you Facebook!

Do you know how to read these statistics? Or even more importantly how to make the most of them?

Let's take a look at a typical Page's stats as we look at my three week old Facebook Page Noosa BizBuzz and what the activity stats mean and what I can do about the information in them to create even better engagement and more 'Likeers' on my page.

First of all let's take a look at the information about 'Monthly Active Users' the arrow is pointing downward even though the information is telling me that there are still 27 people actively commenting and liking my comments on this page – this information put together means that although I have 27commenters actively using the pageI had morelast week and so my average has come down a little. I could read this as meaning I need to do a little more to create conversation on my page, up the ante, find new information to comment and post about, create a competition or poll or other strategy designed to engage others in conversation.

Next I have had 0 new 'Likers' this week, and 63 the week before, this means, I will need to put the word out more often about this page and what it can do, and the other way I could read this information too is that that I may have reached the limit of people who live in Noosa who have business pages on Facebook – so my new strategy might be to reach out to those people in Noosa who do not yet have a business page and let them know I can help them get it up and running and help create Buzz for their page through my BizBuzz pages.

Wall posts and comments are down, this means my own posting and commenting is down this week, again this is tied to the first statistic and means that it is up to me to engage more frequently with my page and get things going again. This is going to happen from time to time as there are times in your business when you are more engaged 'out there' in the real world than online and as I had a couple of conferences to go to this week my own posts and comments were not as frequent – on my other page though Brisbane BizBuzz I had one of my Social Media Managers take over and the stats on that page where not only stable, but on the rise! A great incentive for using a Social Media Manager to boost your page engagement no matter how busy you are.

Visits stats are a reflection of how many people come to take a look at your page, not necessarily those who are reading and commenting on the posts on their wall, just those who have come to look out of curiosity or to decide whether the page is worth their 'Liking' or those who want to visit to see what is happening because they are 'Likers'.

Now this information can really help you to market your business in so many different ways, you can use it to understand what it is you do to create the most activity, commentary and likers on your page by using a strategy once a week to see what happens to your page acitivity. Use only those strategies that create the most engagement. There a loads of options for different markets, using more visual posts like images and videos, using more polls and contests, posting more specials, quotes, questions.. the list goes on.

You could also decide on the best strategy for your page whether you can afford to fit it into your busy lifestyle or whether it would pay to pay for a Social Media Manager to take over the page for you.

Use it to find what you do that creates the most engagement and fine tune the most useful strategies to create maximum engagement and new likers on that page.

What are your favourite tactics, what works for you?

What one thing you have done created the most engagement with your Likers?

What one thing helped your page get more 'Likers"?

I have recieved a few requests for an easy step-by-step guide to creating your page on Facebook, this is a very easy process although there are a few extra tips that can come in very handy when creating a page to help maximise your leverage, your conversations and your exposure that can make a real difference to the success of your page.

So here goes:

First of all the easiest way to “Create your own page” is to go to another person’s page and scroll down to the bottom of the left hand side of the page and look for the link – as shown here

You will be taken to a new page where you can fill in the form with the name and type of your reason for creating a page. Here you have some very important choices to make as the information you choose here is written in stone! So let’s go through your choices:
* Choose your business typ - either a Local Business or if it is a Product or Service or if it is time to brand you as well Public Figure. Here you can also decide if you are more of a community or group based around a certain subject or meetup.
* Choose the name of your page – Here use your Business name, the name of your product or service or of course your own name if you are branding yourself. EXPERT HINT: add two descriptors or keywords of your brand here so that people and search engines know what this page is about. This is expecially important if your business or product name is not clear about what it is. e.g. Our business “The Zen Bull” does not prolaim itself as a website and online marketing company so our descriptors on our FB Page name are “Website Creation and Marketing”.
Once you have made these very important decisions click on ‘Create Official Page’ and Bingo! you have your very own page!

The next page you will see is the very new ‘Getting Started’ page with lots for you to do: Here you will put in the profile image for your page EXPERT HINT: don’t waste this very important real estate – make sure you have a profile image that displays your business or product to maximum effect. See previous post here Ins and Outs of Facebook Pages for more information on enhancing your Page

After a conversation with one of my best clients yesterday, I was shocked to hear that some businesses and corporations still seem to think that social media is just a passing fad. Social Media is in fact taking the world by storm and proof of this is that some of the biggest corporations are not only taking it on they are excelling at it! Look at big brands like Coca Cola, Burger King, Ford, Dell and of course the meteoric success of Starbucks all using social media well.

There are of course some brands who are missing the mark big time and the reasons for this are many, with the main reason being that they are using an old mindset to use new tools.

Old mindsets that miss the mark are:

Social Media is just a passing trend: not with the numbers on social media steadily rising every day and more social media sites popping up weekly.

Social media is too time consuming: a social media strategy needs only to set one or two times a day to be on social media and choosing the right sites on which to put your profiles is a part of the strategy.

Social Media is viewed as just another advertising channel: social media is anything but this, in fact we must look at it in an entirely new light. Social Media for corporations needs to be put in its own more autonomous category altogether as part of a larger marketing strategy.

They think that it isn’t worth setting up a central strategy: Social Media is about having a global strategy and global audience, but this must be both created and monitored by the international head office of the corporation.

They aren’t trying to build communities: using your social media profiles as just another place to advertise, sending out link after link or sales pitch after sales pitch with no conversation is not what social media is about at all.

They don’t see the long term view: social media is exponetial and can grow very quickly, BUT it can take little while to generate the trust and respect needed to allow fans to connect with a big brand and this takes time!

They can’t track it properly so they don’t trust it: the metrics are there, but as old mindset marketers everywhere bewail – none of it is entirely definitive – this is people and trend driven and unless big brands are keeping up they will go down.

What Corporations who miss the mark are missing:

Social Media is SOCIAL: it’s about building relationships based on trust and respect for the person handling the profiles, this means one very important thing – you MUST have trust and respect for the person you have handling those profiles. Do they post in ways that authentically represent the brand? Do they have the integrity and sense of enthusiasm necessary to show passion for the brand? Are they incentivise to create a worldwide audience? Starbucks could not have done what they did with social media if they hadn’t had someone handling their social media who filled this criteria, who is handling your social media strategy?

If this was farmed out to young Sally because she understands Facebook and Twitter, you may want to rethink this. Social Media is a profession and it needs a professional to handle branding and dissemination of your marketing messages and brand awareness, if this is not possible it needs to be someone who is passionate about the brand and has the best interests of it at heart. Social media is fast becoming the ‘voice’ of the world, you not only need to know what they’re saying about you, you need to be listening and responding. Because it is the ‘voice of the world’ who is going to be deciding if your corporation makes it or not, yes social media is just that powerful. If you doubt this just take a look at what is happening with BP right now, or what happened with Nestle, Pampers and of course the makers of Mortrin.

Social Media Requires Transparancy: now this is a big one for many large corporations, the idea that the marketing message is going to be in the hands of ‘the people’, and worse that they may recieve negative comments on their social media profiles where everyone can see them. Here’s a hard fact – both of these things are happening anyway and with no listening ear or social media presence what can you do about it? Nothing! The lessons from Domino’s and other brand who were caught out on social media are profound, when you can hear and converse with your market, when you are in a relationship with them you can create enormous good will and word of mouth by admitting you were wrong and finding a way to settle any disagreements with style and flair!

Not only this, but this kind of transparency also helps to create brand advocates and even evangelists who see your brand as trustworthy, just because your brand was there on the spot admitting you were wrong and settling the dispute online right in front of the world. You can gain such amazing charisma from these small acts of kindness, proving that your brand is still listening to the little guy. This is your opportunity to take the BIG out of BIg brand and bring a warm and fuzzy feeling to your customers that will translate into bottom line win/win for all.

Social Media Means Sharing: Yes, we’re back talking about ‘warm and fuzzy’ things again. Sharing means listening, communicating and collaboration with your customers, which also means you will be right at the coal face and able to ask your customers what they want from your brand. Talk about the simplest way to ‘test’ the market, think of the opportunities to raise your brands worldwide profile! Starbucks have this down pat, asking their audience to ‘design’ the next coffee or the Technorati asking their audience to help them design their new logo. This kind of sharing means trust is a two way street and this builds even more trust, this kind of mutual trust and admiration can only translate in higher profits.

Social Media is About Being Authentic: Now this comes back to a point I made earlier in this post about who you trust to handle your social media branded profiles. Because social media requires an authentic mindset from everyone and I mean everyone, corporations need to have someone who understand who your brand is, what the brands vision and mission is. What personality your brand has, because your brand needs to be HUMAN! People want to do business with people, social media is to blame for this as it makes every brand more accessable. This is key! Only humans can be authentic, corporations cannot, the human you have as your voice on social media needs to be authentic and authentically representing your brand.

Social Media Requires Consistency: There is no set and forget in social media, someone needs to be online daily or at least very regularly, in fact the bigger your corporation the more often you will need to be there. This will mean you must have a strategy, a team of people who know what they’re doing and scheduling, goals and outcomes in place. Social media is constantly changing and growing and you will need someone in charge who is on top of what’s happening and what’s trending and what to do next. Someone who understands that social media is all about trickle feeding your social media profiles consistently, answering questions and complaints daily, praising and rewarding your brand advocates and evangelists and coming up with innovative and creative ways to engage your online audience.

Social Media for Corporations needs to be set up by someone who understands your brand and how best to use the different social media platforms for maximum effect, which ones will work for you and how to create initial and continuous engagement for your corporation. Corporations need to start now, social media is not a trend that will die out, in fact it is a steadily growing trend that sees no end to its exponential growth, look at Facebook now topping 500 Million users by mid-July – the world has found its voice and it is has no intention of losing it again.

Get ready for a whole new world or get left behind.

If you have ever been a teacher or learned NLP you will have at some stage come across a system called 4Mat, it is an excellent across the board learning and training tool.

The 4Mat system is simple with the idea that if you can cater for the different learning styles in your presentation or training session you will not only engage your trainees or listeners you will keep them engaged with your presentation by allowing their brains to follow your information by providing the information in a format that allows their curiosity to both build and be assuaged.

In other words you are going to answer the questions they have as they arise naturally in their minds, leading to maximum memory retention and enjoyment of your training, teaching or presentation session.

Now have you thought about adding this system of presenting to the copywriting or your articles and blog posts?

Your task as a business owner is to understand the problems and challenges of your consumers and to provide answers and solve problems for them. In your online marketing you are setting about establishing yourself as the trusted and respected expert in your field. This information needs to be set out in such a way that it creates immediate and sustained engagement to the average online surfer. This is where the 4Mat system comes in very handy.

No matter how wonderful your information is, if it is not written or presented in a way that engages the reader, listener or watcher the veracity of the information will be completely lost on them. So the article, blog post, video audio or comment will be unsuccessful even though it may hold the very problem solving answers the surfer is looking for.

Writing with engagement in mind has to take into consideration the people you are targeting, their personality types and their reactions to the information and how it is presented. Video is hailed as the be all and end all of engaging media, yet if you have a person with a boring voice or who is really an introvert (I’m thinking of the movie Ferris Beuller as I write this and the teacher who said over and over, “Beuller, Beuller… LOL).

The 4Mat system is aimed at teachers and educators and can provide the insight we need to setting out our information in such a way that we create maximum engagement with our audience. This system maintains that although people use a wide range of learning styles, individuals tend to favour one particular method over another.

Basically Some people want to know Why, some people want to know What, some people want to know How and the rest want to know What If. More specifically what each group of peoples wants to hear is:

Why? People (Approx 35% of population)
Why people learn best through discussions. They want to discuss the reasons why, specifically so they can find out why something is worth doing. They are unlikely to take action until they’ve explored the reasons for doing so.

What? People (Approx 22% of population)
What people learn best from teaching. They want to be taught the information either verbally or be given it on paper. What people are going to be the most satisfied when they are presented with so much information that they can’t keep up. They are likely to take lots of notes and try to get as much of it down as possible.

How? People (Approx 18% of population)
How people learn best from coaching. They don’t really care about the reasons or the theory – they want to be diving in there and getting their hands dirty. The sooner you have How people doing something and giving them feedback on what they are doing the happier they will be.

What If? People (Approx 25% of population)
What If people learn best from self discovery. Don’t be surprised when What If people, after being given clear instructions, go off and do something completely different. They get great pleasure from changing things around, trying out new ways of doing things and trying to get an answer to the question of “I wonder what would happen if I just tried this… or that… or…?”. What If people are great at considering the consequences of what they are doing and testing the boundaries. You can really engage this way of thinking by speculating about the opportunities to embrace and extend what they have learnt about.

These four methods are…

Imaginative Learning – Feeling and watching, seeking personal associations, meaning and involvement. Imaginative Learners seek personal involvement, meaning and connections in what they learn. They act concretely and reflect on their experience. They need to know why they are learning something. Learning strategies associated with this learning style include listening, speaking, interacting and brainstorming.

Analytic Learning – Listening to and thinking about information; seeks facts thinking through ideas, what does the expert think. Analytic Learners seek facts and information, formulate ideas and think through ideas. They favour abstract processing and reflection. They need to focus on what they are learning, on content. Learning strategies that suit this learning style include observing, analysing, classifying and theorising.

Common Sense Learning – Thinking and doing. Experimenting, building, creating usability, tinkering. Common Sense Learners learn by doing, experimenting and applying ideas. They gain information by active experimentation and process it abstractly. They need to know how what they learn can be applied. Learning strategies favoured by these learners include experimenting, manipulating, and having a go.

Dynamic Learning – Doing, feeling. Seeking hidden possibilities, exploring, learning by trial and error. Dynamic Learners learn by exploring, seeking possibilities, self discovery and trial and error. They like to experiment and test their experiences concretely. They like to apply what they learnt to new situations, to adapt and modify what they learn, to ask “what if?” Dynamic thinkers use strategies such as modifying, adapting, risking and creating.

Another factor that plays a part in how an individual inherently learns is the usage of left and right brain.

* Left brain – Operates best through structure and sequence.
* Right Brain – Comprehends images, seeks patterns.

When the left and right brains are both used during the learning process higher learning and thinking is achieved. There is a greater range and depth of understanding leading to a greater implementation or take up of the new ideas.

The model extends to include a breakdown of

1. How we perceive the information – Take new information in and this scales from THINKING (Conceptualizing) to FEELING (Experience).
2. How we process the information – What is done with the information which scales from DOING (Active or Experimental) to WATCHING(Reflective or Observing).

Why, What, How and What If are the questions you will answer using the 4Mat system and in that order, as you can see from the graphic there are submodalities for each sector and so this is really a 12 stage process. Once you have grasped the idea this is a simple way to present information as it follows your own natural learning style as well.

The first 3 steps of the cycle are dedicated to winning the attention of your audience and engaging their interest.

Steps 4 to 6 is where you give them the meat of the information and help them build their knowledge of the subject.

In steps 7 through 9 you teach the skills needed for your audience to begin to put the new knowledg into practice.

And in steps 10 to 12 you will actively encourage your audience to put their new skills into practice, extend their knowledge and thereby internalise the knowledge they have gained.

As way of an example, consider how you could use the 4MAT System on your website.

Launch your presentation with a “This is why I am giving you this information and this is why you would want to know what I can do for you”

Explain what you can do for them. Go into the details and explain exactly what it is that you are offering.

Then you want to go into details about how it will work for them. Explain “This is how it can work for you. This is how similar clients have used it to their benefit”. If your product/service allows for you to give them a hands of demo then this is the time to let them see this.

Then share with the the potential benefits if they do go ahead and the consequences if they decide not to go ahead.

Finally you close and give them an action to complete, this is often where the ‘call to action’ comes in.

How could you use The 4MAT System?

The 4MAT System is a powerful system for engaging with an audience. How could you use it to make your communication more powerful?

* Could you use it in your sales presentations?
* Could you use it in the class room?
* Could you use it when trying to persuade your friends/family/staff of a fresh idea?
* Could you use it in your written work?

Now go back over this article and see how I have used the 4Mat system to plan and execute the layout and progress of the information in it. Recognise it? 4Mat all the way!

The fact is we all use each of the ways to process the information, we just begin at different places and favour one or more over the others, personally I am a Why and What if person, I need the other information too, but if you answer these two I can often figure out the rest on my own or with little help. What is your processing order? Do you know?

Billionaires and millionaire are just people like you and I, the difference is that they know how to play to their strengths, minimise their weaknesses, achieve their goals and most of all they are prepared to do without to get it all.

Is this something you do?

Playing to your strengths: Take a leaf out of the book of billionaires like Warren Buffet, Donald Trump and my favourite Richard Branson they only ever play to their strengths, each one of these amazing gentlemen has a different strength and they make sure to capitalise on it to the max.

Warren Buffet is a natural trader or investor and he restricts himself to businesses he understands while open to adaptation he follows some strict rules of investing (his own), and looks for value-based investments. “I was wired at birth to allocate capital and lucky enough to have people around me early on (my parents and teachers and Susie) who helped me make the most of it,” Buffet told Carol Lumis of Fortune magazine.

Donald Trump is a born manager or CEO, he understand how to run a company which makes his strength – leadership. He knows how to get the best out of people and to generate employee loyalty. He tends to be a little unconventional to say the least and takes risks others would quail at, yet for him this works.

Richard Branson is what I call an adventurer, he takes risks and he is flamboyant in his personal and business life. He also is a born leader and is known for his eccentricity, he believes in learning constantly and is very creative, an ideas man and very social, “Having a personality of caring about people is important,” he says. “You cant be a good leader unless you generally like people. That is how you bring out the best in them.”

How can three such different people all create the billions they have in business? By playing to these strengths and minimising their weaknesses, which they do by hiring people they can trust to do those things they are not great at, and allowing them to get on with their jobs. Learn from this!

How many times have we tried to be the one-stop-shop in our own businesses? To quote Dr Phil, “How’s that working out for you?”

Remember this: extreme delegation – giving away every task that is not in your area of special talents – can be a recipe for extraordinary riches.

Working on your business as opposed to working in your business: Yes, we have all heard this one before, I want to know how many of you are actually following this advice?

The trouble with working in your business thinking that you have to work hard to ‘get ahead’ is that you never get time to plan ahead. I have to ask, “Do you know where you are going?” How can you get there if there is no map to follow?

Setting aside the time to brainstorm with others either trusted employees, partners or a mastermind club is essential for setting goals and taking the steps needed for those goals to be achieved. This is actually more important than slaving away every day in your business, or do you want to be doing that for the rest of your life?

Keeping your vision outside of yourself: Right up there with working on your business is the mindset you need to stay motivated. When we look at money as our main objective we tend to be focussed inward and staying motivated enough to reach your goals becomes difficult.

We end up working and slaving away thinking we are getting ahead and yet money seems to be even more diffucult to come by.

Understanding that by focussing outward on what we are achieving for our customers and clients and the contribution we are making to their lives through our business can change our whole perspective. This mindset can reignite the orginal passion we had for our business and motivate our actions to adding value to our clients/customers lives, increasing consumer trust, respect and loyalty which creates a natural inflow to our business.

Knowing how easy it is to fall into old habits of having an inward focus, especially when things are tight, we need to have a set of strategies in place reminding us to focus outwardly, these can be vision and mission statements, vision boards which include long term and short term goals and the outcomes which will prove to us we have achieved those goals.

Understanding money: One of the key competencies of billionaires is the understand of what money really is and what it isn’t. Money is not a goal, Warren Buffet has said this best when he said, “Money means absolutely nothing to me!” he then qualified this statement with, “..money is only a vehicle to doing what I love.”

Financial freedom is really the ability to have the things in life that make it worthwhile and that may not be material things, for me this means having the money to help my family or to spend more time with them doing things that make us happy. This is what I work for.

Billionaires also understand how to do without or wait for their rewards and not give into the need for instant gratification. Yes it does seem like they can have anything they want, but it wasn’t always like this for them. They had to learn what was important to spend their money on and what wasn’t, often driving old, beaten up vehicles and investing instead on their business or their education.

If you have a fear of not having enough money and yet you spend what you have to fill the hole that fear creates in you, you will manifest the outcome that you will never have ‘enough’. Read more about Money, Wealth and Abundance.

Don’t take it all too seriously: remember that this is life, it is filled with ups and downs and you can always make another start. Most billionaires have won and lost businesses, many of them suffering at least one bankruptcy along the way. They learned what worked and didn’t work and kept on going and developed a sense of humour about it all.

Each of the billinaires have the ability to laugh about themselves and their lives, to take time off and to treat life as an adventure. One of the mistakes people like you and me make is thinking it is all so serious, when we are successful we earnestly worry about losing it, when things are not going so well we worry about not having it. Give yourself and your business a break!

Get some perspective and decide if it isn’t fun, it’s not worth having!

Make friends with the media: Pay them the respect they need to do their jobs well and they will honour you too. If you are thrown a curly question, take the time you need to answer it without being aggressive and never be defensive or they will smell blood.

Warren Buffet, Donald Trump and Richard Branson are great at this and as a result recieve more good press than bad, even when they are ridiculed in the press they join in the joke showing good humour and this is a perfect example of not taking themselves too seriously. They have also taken the step of branding themselves as much as their busineses..

Things to leave you thinking:

* “Money frees you from doing things you dislike. Since I dislike doing nearly everything, money is handy.”
–Groucho Marx

* “Half of life is luck; the other half is discipline—-and that’s the important half, for without discipline you wouldn’t know what to do with luck.”
–Carl Zuckmayer

* “Bureaucracy is nothing more than the hardening of an organization’s arteries.”
–William P. Anthony

* “The salary of the chief executive of a large corporation is not a market award for achievement. It is frequently in the nature of a warm personal gesture by the individual to himself.”
–John Kenneth Galbraith

* “We can tell our values by looking at our checkbook stubs.”
–Gloria Steinem

* “If your Riches are yours, why don’t you take them with you to t ‘other world?”
–Benjamin Franklin

* “Take events in your life seriously, take work seriously, but don’t take yourself seriously, or you’ll become affected, pompous and boring.”
–Shelley Duvall

* “You only have to do a very few things right in your life so long as you don’t do too many things wrong.”
–Warren E. Buffett

The new ‘smart’ phones are about to change the web again forever and one of the ways you can stay ahead of the game, along with making sure your site is optimized for mobile is to ‘geo-tag’ your site with one of the new location based social sites: Foursquare, Gowalla, BriteKite, Yelp, MyTown…

A simple explanation for these new geo-tagging sites is that location based social networking allows members of those communities to share their location through GPS, mobile email or text message. Once you have been located in an area you can then get a list of businesses and venues to choose from, simply choose the coffee shop, shopping centre, club or resort where you are actually located and ‘check in’. Once you have done this you can add comments and reviews about the venue, or let friends know your there and meet up.

For members this allows them to broadcast their whereabouts and ask others to join them, or just show off, but for businesses this is a whole new ballgame!

What’s really interesting about an app like Foursquare, currently the leading location based community site, after coming from behind after a late start, is how local businesses can leverage their presence on the site to attract more customers. The idea is that Foursquare and Gowalla and others give out ‘badges’ and other kinds of kudos to members for checking in. The more times you check in the more badges and honours the member gets until they earn what is called a ‘Mayorship’ (on Foursquare).

A ‘Mayorship’ usually comes with a prize and this is determined by the business itself, usually a discount or an extra added bonus for being a regular. This takes ‘checking in’to your business to the level of an online game and gaming is huge!

Let’s give an example:

Imagine you are visiting a new city for the first time, before you go you log onto the site and search for “resorts in Noosa” and up pops a list of resorts, scrolling through you find the perfect accommodation (with great onsite reviews) for you and make a booking after noting down the phone number or website booking page. When you arrive at the resort you make sure to ‘checkin’ at Foursquare as you check into your hotel, you get to your room and using your phone again you log on and ‘search’ the area for a restaurant, you have a taste for Thai food tonight so your search is for “Thai food in Noosa.” Again a list of suitable place pops up and you check the reviews and find one that everyone seems to rave about and ring them and make a reservation. Of course when you get there you ‘check in’ at Foursquare as they have a special, if you check in 3 times you will get a free bottle of wine with your meal.

Next morning you want to shop…

Now the list of sites you get is based on those smart early adopters who have listed their sites and/or made sure their sites were coded with GIS data, those that don’t show up have lost out. Are you listed?

From a marketing perspective the introduction of location based social sites is a goldmine:

Prequalified Target: The consumer is already near you and looking for something in your area, if you are closer to where the customer is located they are much more likely to come to you – location based marketing. Interestingly if the consumer doesn’t use a search term the site they are using just gives them a list of businesses near them so there is also the probability of dropins as people learn that your business is close.

Increased Impulse Buying: Your marketing message is delivered to the consumer, in real time, as they search for businesses in their area, e.g. “Customers who dine with us in the next 30 minutes recieve a 15% discount,” prompting an immediate response.

Relationship Marketing: Customers who frequent your business earn badges and ‘Mayorships’ thus earning loyalty bonuses and building a relationship with you and your business (there are many ways this can be capitalised on in a win-win for you and your customer). This also create a history with you which can be used as research for your marketing, tracking what works and what doesn’t and responding to the customer trends allows you to give your customers what they want from you.

Targeted Promotions and Direct Marketing: Your promotions are truly targetted to your customers in real time via their own location, search and ‘checkin’ habits and are delivered on demand. No waste of flyers or advertising in other ways.

Customer Engagement: By earning badges and bonuses your customer feels like a ‘star’ in your eyes and uses this emotional engagement to boast to their friends, creating brand recognition and loyatly and amazing word-of-mouth marketing that easily goes fractal (my version of viral).

ROI: Loyaty and ‘Gaming’ for badges and Mayorships determines a high rate of repeat ‘checkins’ and purchases with amazing Return on Investment.

If you are going to use more than one site for instance Foursquare and Gowalla make sure you have thoroughly researched beforehand the different ways these sites earn customer loyalty and plan ahead. Add your website and your specials to each site and then make sure you advertise your presence on these sites and the specials customers and clients will recieve for ‘checking in’ on social media and on the front door of your business/es.

Make sure everyone who interacts with your business knows that you are on these sites and that you are rewarding loyalty online and offline!

These new location bases social sites are still new and updating their customization options all the time so make sure you keep track of what’s available to businesses e.g. :

Foursquare: Once you have an account on Foursquare you can then create to-do lists giving users and ‘friends’ a list of places to explore in your area, imagine the possibilities of adding to-do lists that include your business?

You can then add your business, if it is already added by someone else you can then claim your business which will be verified by them via phone call or email to make sure you really are the manager or marketing manager of that site. When you do this you immediately have the chance to create your first visitors and Mayorship specials.

Please know ahead of time what specials you would like to offer people for their loyaly, there are options to reward customers for different levels of loyatly including how many visits, immediate specials…

Then it is time to decide how to use the many options available to your business to reward customer loyalty:

Coupons

Travel and sightseeing tips

Recommendations (cross marketing opportunities abound)

Specials

Now it’s up to you, how many ways can you think of to use this new location based marketing?
