I hear a lot of people asking about growing their fan base on their Facebook Fan Page, and the answer is to create engagement through various means. The most important thing I can recommend is this:

If you are present and a presence on your fan page your fan base will grow just as quickly as your friends.

Make sure to Add Value to your fans by posting great content and information in the form of blogs posts – your own and other experts in your field – that’s right, do not be afraid to prove that you are secure in your role by promoting others. Answer questions your fans may have and try to always to so promptly. Join in conversations, comment on other fan pages and use the @ feature to credit other fan pages for their information if you are reposting.

Other great ways to Add Value in the form of information is to bring your own blog feed into your Pages – Notes Tab, or you could choose to feed in selected Twitter updates via the RSS feed from your favorites to keep it updating. Then all you do is favorite your own blog updates, quotes and selceted retweets for them to instantly appear on your page.

Add a Static FBML or HTML App on it’s own tab on your Fan Page and configure it a little like a “Landing or Squeeze page” this is almost like having a Mini Website on your FB Fan Page and you can add in an Optin box and so much more.

Converse with your fans: ask them quesitons about their own businesses, their own challenges in your niche’s arena, give credit to others, give praise when it is due, quote others including other Facebookers. Find ways to create great conversation on your Page. Clue: conversation = engagement.

Post photo’s of you with friends, at seminars and your own place of business or workshops, at meetups and tweetups etc.. and tag the people you are seen with in those photo’s with a personal comment.

Promote your FB Fan Page on Twitter, your email signature, your online signature, your business card, and even on the bottom of your comments – when appropriate

Link your page to your Twitter account so that all your FB Fan Page comments automagically appear on your Twitter stream http://facebook.com/twitter Do this with your Friendfeed and any other social profiles you have.

Favourite other Pages on FB, this is easily done by clicking on this link and choosing which page to link it to.

Try out the Social Ads on FB: you can easily choose to target certain areas, age groups, sex, keywords and more and they’re easy to set up.

Last week I was asked a question about having a Blog as well as a site on our Facebook Fan Page and this was the answer I gave:
AskAnnie: Q I have a site.. do I really need a blog too? A: This is really up to u, I like to add a blog to a site as

search engines love new content & blogs r gr8 for that,

ur posts help to brand you as an expert in ur niche,

adding ur posts to social media sites etc.. creates backlinks to ur blog & to ur site.. if you don’t like writing try outsourcing ur writing to a uni student or a place like odesk.com

Now that we have more space I thought I would give you a much fuller explanation:

Blogs are one of the easiest way to increase your Search Engine Optimization (SEO) especially for beginners, with almost no experience in SEO at all you can use an onsite blog to do some of the most important aspects of SEO for your site:- adding new content to your site, create backlinks, create deep backlinks, regularly add and refresh keywords to your site and that’s just for starters!

Let’s take a better look at what those things mean:

New Content: One of the things those little search engine spiders are looking for when they crawl your site every few days is NEW CONTENT (remember content is King!) and the easiest way to give them something new and tasty to munch on is one or more new posts.

Refreshing and Adding Keywords: New content that is matched to keywords used within the content is even more appetising to those cute little bugs and if you haven’t started using the keyword or tags in your blogging yet, may I suggest you do so immediately.

Branding you as The Expert: your blog posts when informative and interesting allow your readers to see the depth of your experience for themselves. They will often subscribe to your posts so that they can keep up with your updates and you become a trusted expert for them, who they will then tell their friends about (WOM), ReTweet, and generally help you create buzz around your brand.

Creating BackLinks: Once you have created a blog post you would immediately post the link and post description into your social media sites, bookmark it and ping the post out into the world (well at least I hope you do?:) This creates backlinks to your site. Adding into the post itself links to other pages on your site create what are known as deep backlinks into your site, something that search engines love!

There you have it just by having a blog attached to your site, like this one, you have become your own SEO expert! Well almost

Facebook regularly bans users for all sorts of reasons, the main ones are spamming or lying – so take care that you don’t.

I educate people via workshops, presentations, blogging and online webucation about social marketing and one thing I can be heard to say every time I talk about social media sites is this: Be authentic, be real and be seen to be a real person not just a business! Social sites are social and are meant to be about conversations and relationships – marketing has to be secondary to this.

Building and branding yourself, yes you, as a trusted expert is far more important than advertising your business in ways that will not only get you banned, but ignored and blocked by other users.

Here is a list of the ways you can get yourself banned from FB:

Don’t use your real name (or at least a name that you are known by all over the web): of course I was not born Annie Infinite however it is the name I use all over the web and it is on my business cards and I am known as Annie Infinite off and online. I had a great experience with FB over this as someone convinced me to try going back to my unused married name and I did and immediately regretted it. I told FB the story and they were kind enough to reinstate my real name of Annie Infinite for me after some checking on the web (they googled me), this kindness has endeared the FB team to me forever.

Friend too many people: yes you can have 5000 friends but please don’t try to get them all at once. Be discerning and make real friends, real connections with people just as you would in real life.

Post too many messages on your wall: this is even more important if you are marketing you can be banned for “excessive evangelism.”

Join too many groups: this can look awefully suspicious and even more so if you are posting lots of messages or links to your sites, or fan pages on the group walls.

You use the same message too many times: I know someone personally who thought they could get away with spamming via private messages they sent the same message out to their whole friend base in groups of 20 people (you are only allowed to message 20 friends at once). She was banned within 15 minutes!

Set your dog, cat or business up with a personal profile: you must be human – animals and businesses cannot have a personal profile, yes you might get away with it for a while, but you will be found and you will be banned. The FB algorithms are getting better every day..

You are too young: if Fb find out that you are under 18, either via your information, your actions or your language – banned!

Write offensive material: this is terminal almost instantly! No second chances.

Steal information off FB: again instantly terminal! pulling content via script, stealing content and reusing it elsewhere (unless you are the author), they will find you.

Spam people: with your app, your links, your business page, via poking, message etc…: basically excessive use of any of these will result in being banned.

As I always advocate, be real, be a person your marketing will come from being a trusted source of information, a real caring person, and truthful!

How do you get started?

How do you get known?

How do you become trusted in your niche?
