After a conversation with one of my best clients yesterday, I was shocked to hear that some businesses and corporations still seem to think that social media is just a passing fad. Social Media is in fact taking the world by storm and proof of this is that some of the biggest corporations are not only taking it on they are excelling at it! Look at big brands like Coca Cola, Burger King, Ford, Dell and of course the meteoric success of Starbucks all using social media well.

There are of course some brands who are missing the mark big time and the reasons for this are many, with the main reason being that they are using an old mindset to use new tools.

Old mindsets that miss the mark are:

Social Media is just a passing trend: not with the numbers on social media steadily rising every day and more social media sites popping up weekly.

Social media is too time consuming: a social media strategy needs only to set one or two times a day to be on social media and choosing the right sites on which to put your profiles is a part of the strategy.

Social Media is viewed as just another advertising channel: social media is anything but this, in fact we must look at it in an entirely new light. Social Media for corporations needs to be put in its own more autonomous category altogether as part of a larger marketing strategy.

They think that it isn’t worth setting up a central strategy: Social Media is about having a global strategy and global audience, but this must be both created and monitored by the international head office of the corporation.

They aren’t trying to build communities: using your social media profiles as just another place to advertise, sending out link after link or sales pitch after sales pitch with no conversation is not what social media is about at all.

They don’t see the long term view: social media is exponetial and can grow very quickly, BUT it can take little while to generate the trust and respect needed to allow fans to connect with a big brand and this takes time!

They can’t track it properly so they don’t trust it: the metrics are there, but as old mindset marketers everywhere bewail – none of it is entirely definitive – this is people and trend driven and unless big brands are keeping up they will go down.

What Corporations who miss the mark are missing:

Social Media is SOCIAL: it’s about building relationships based on trust and respect for the person handling the profiles, this means one very important thing – you MUST have trust and respect for the person you have handling those profiles. Do they post in ways that authentically represent the brand? Do they have the integrity and sense of enthusiasm necessary to show passion for the brand? Are they incentivise to create a worldwide audience? Starbucks could not have done what they did with social media if they hadn’t had someone handling their social media who filled this criteria, who is handling your social media strategy?

If this was farmed out to young Sally because she understands Facebook and Twitter, you may want to rethink this. Social Media is a profession and it needs a professional to handle branding and dissemination of your marketing messages and brand awareness, if this is not possible it needs to be someone who is passionate about the brand and has the best interests of it at heart. Social media is fast becoming the ‘voice’ of the world, you not only need to know what they’re saying about you, you need to be listening and responding. Because it is the ‘voice of the world’ who is going to be deciding if your corporation makes it or not, yes social media is just that powerful. If you doubt this just take a look at what is happening with BP right now, or what happened with Nestle, Pampers and of course the makers of Mortrin.

Social Media Requires Transparancy: now this is a big one for many large corporations, the idea that the marketing message is going to be in the hands of ‘the people’, and worse that they may recieve negative comments on their social media profiles where everyone can see them. Here’s a hard fact – both of these things are happening anyway and with no listening ear or social media presence what can you do about it? Nothing! The lessons from Domino’s and other brand who were caught out on social media are profound, when you can hear and converse with your market, when you are in a relationship with them you can create enormous good will and word of mouth by admitting you were wrong and finding a way to settle any disagreements with style and flair!

Not only this, but this kind of transparency also helps to create brand advocates and even evangelists who see your brand as trustworthy, just because your brand was there on the spot admitting you were wrong and settling the dispute online right in front of the world. You can gain such amazing charisma from these small acts of kindness, proving that your brand is still listening to the little guy. This is your opportunity to take the BIG out of BIg brand and bring a warm and fuzzy feeling to your customers that will translate into bottom line win/win for all.

Social Media Means Sharing: Yes, we’re back talking about ‘warm and fuzzy’ things again. Sharing means listening, communicating and collaboration with your customers, which also means you will be right at the coal face and able to ask your customers what they want from your brand. Talk about the simplest way to ‘test’ the market, think of the opportunities to raise your brands worldwide profile! Starbucks have this down pat, asking their audience to ‘design’ the next coffee or the Technorati asking their audience to help them design their new logo. This kind of sharing means trust is a two way street and this builds even more trust, this kind of mutual trust and admiration can only translate in higher profits.

Social Media is About Being Authentic: Now this comes back to a point I made earlier in this post about who you trust to handle your social media branded profiles. Because social media requires an authentic mindset from everyone and I mean everyone, corporations need to have someone who understand who your brand is, what the brands vision and mission is. What personality your brand has, because your brand needs to be HUMAN! People want to do business with people, social media is to blame for this as it makes every brand more accessable. This is key! Only humans can be authentic, corporations cannot, the human you have as your voice on social media needs to be authentic and authentically representing your brand.

Social Media Requires Consistency: There is no set and forget in social media, someone needs to be online daily or at least very regularly, in fact the bigger your corporation the more often you will need to be there. This will mean you must have a strategy, a team of people who know what they’re doing and scheduling, goals and outcomes in place. Social media is constantly changing and growing and you will need someone in charge who is on top of what’s happening and what’s trending and what to do next. Someone who understands that social media is all about trickle feeding your social media profiles consistently, answering questions and complaints daily, praising and rewarding your brand advocates and evangelists and coming up with innovative and creative ways to engage your online audience.

Social Media for Corporations needs to be set up by someone who understands your brand and how best to use the different social media platforms for maximum effect, which ones will work for you and how to create initial and continuous engagement for your corporation. Corporations need to start now, social media is not a trend that will die out, in fact it is a steadily growing trend that sees no end to its exponential growth, look at Facebook now topping 500 Million users by mid-July – the world has found its voice and it is has no intention of losing it again.

Get ready for a whole new world or get left behind.

The new ‘smart’ phones are about to change the web again forever and one of the ways you can stay ahead of the game, along with making sure your site is optimized for mobile is to ‘geo-tag’ your site with one of the new location based social sites: Foursquare, Gowalla, BriteKite, Yelp, MyTown…

A simple explanation for these new geo-tagging sites is that location based social networking allows members of those communities to share their location through GPS, mobile email or text message. Once you have been located in an area you can then get a list of businesses and venues to choose from, simply choose the coffee shop, shopping centre, club or resort where you are actually located and ‘check in’. Once you have done this you can add comments and reviews about the venue, or let friends know your there and meet up.

For members this allows them to broadcast their whereabouts and ask others to join them, or just show off, but for businesses this is a whole new ballgame!

What’s really interesting about an app like Foursquare, currently the leading location based community site, after coming from behind after a late start, is how local businesses can leverage their presence on the site to attract more customers. The idea is that Foursquare and Gowalla and others give out ‘badges’ and other kinds of kudos to members for checking in. The more times you check in the more badges and honours the member gets until they earn what is called a ‘Mayorship’ (on Foursquare).

A ‘Mayorship’ usually comes with a prize and this is determined by the business itself, usually a discount or an extra added bonus for being a regular. This takes ‘checking in’to your business to the level of an online game and gaming is huge!

Let’s give an example:

Imagine you are visiting a new city for the first time, before you go you log onto the site and search for “resorts in Noosa” and up pops a list of resorts, scrolling through you find the perfect accommodation (with great onsite reviews) for you and make a booking after noting down the phone number or website booking page. When you arrive at the resort you make sure to ‘checkin’ at Foursquare as you check into your hotel, you get to your room and using your phone again you log on and ‘search’ the area for a restaurant, you have a taste for Thai food tonight so your search is for “Thai food in Noosa.” Again a list of suitable place pops up and you check the reviews and find one that everyone seems to rave about and ring them and make a reservation. Of course when you get there you ‘check in’ at Foursquare as they have a special, if you check in 3 times you will get a free bottle of wine with your meal.

Next morning you want to shop…

Now the list of sites you get is based on those smart early adopters who have listed their sites and/or made sure their sites were coded with GIS data, those that don’t show up have lost out. Are you listed?

From a marketing perspective the introduction of location based social sites is a goldmine:

Prequalified Target: The consumer is already near you and looking for something in your area, if you are closer to where the customer is located they are much more likely to come to you – location based marketing. Interestingly if the consumer doesn’t use a search term the site they are using just gives them a list of businesses near them so there is also the probability of dropins as people learn that your business is close.

Increased Impulse Buying: Your marketing message is delivered to the consumer, in real time, as they search for businesses in their area, e.g. “Customers who dine with us in the next 30 minutes recieve a 15% discount,” prompting an immediate response.

Relationship Marketing: Customers who frequent your business earn badges and ‘Mayorships’ thus earning loyalty bonuses and building a relationship with you and your business (there are many ways this can be capitalised on in a win-win for you and your customer). This also create a history with you which can be used as research for your marketing, tracking what works and what doesn’t and responding to the customer trends allows you to give your customers what they want from you.

Targeted Promotions and Direct Marketing: Your promotions are truly targetted to your customers in real time via their own location, search and ‘checkin’ habits and are delivered on demand. No waste of flyers or advertising in other ways.

Customer Engagement: By earning badges and bonuses your customer feels like a ‘star’ in your eyes and uses this emotional engagement to boast to their friends, creating brand recognition and loyatly and amazing word-of-mouth marketing that easily goes fractal (my version of viral).

ROI: Loyaty and ‘Gaming’ for badges and Mayorships determines a high rate of repeat ‘checkins’ and purchases with amazing Return on Investment.

If you are going to use more than one site for instance Foursquare and Gowalla make sure you have thoroughly researched beforehand the different ways these sites earn customer loyalty and plan ahead. Add your website and your specials to each site and then make sure you advertise your presence on these sites and the specials customers and clients will recieve for ‘checking in’ on social media and on the front door of your business/es.

Make sure everyone who interacts with your business knows that you are on these sites and that you are rewarding loyalty online and offline!

These new location bases social sites are still new and updating their customization options all the time so make sure you keep track of what’s available to businesses e.g. :

Foursquare: Once you have an account on Foursquare you can then create to-do lists giving users and ‘friends’ a list of places to explore in your area, imagine the possibilities of adding to-do lists that include your business?

You can then add your business, if it is already added by someone else you can then claim your business which will be verified by them via phone call or email to make sure you really are the manager or marketing manager of that site. When you do this you immediately have the chance to create your first visitors and Mayorship specials.

Please know ahead of time what specials you would like to offer people for their loyaly, there are options to reward customers for different levels of loyatly including how many visits, immediate specials…

Then it is time to decide how to use the many options available to your business to reward customer loyalty:

Coupons

Travel and sightseeing tips

Recommendations (cross marketing opportunities abound)

Specials

Now it’s up to you, how many ways can you think of to use this new location based marketing?

“Of all the endeavors we humans are now engaged in, perhaps the grandest of them all is the steady weaving together of our lives, minds, and artifacts into a global scale network. This great work has been going on for decades, but recently our ability to connect has accelerated. Two brand-new technological achievements–the silicon chip and the silicate glass fiber–have rammed together with incredible speed. Like nuclear particles crashing together in a cyclotron, the intersection of these two innovations has unleashed a never-before-seen force: the power of a pervasive net. As this grand net spreads, an animated swarm is reticulating the surface of the planet. We are clothing the globe with a network society.

The dynamic of our society, and particularly our new economy, will increasingly obey the logic of networks. Understanding how networks work will be the key to understanding how the economy works.” (New Rules for the New Economy – Kevin Kelly, 1998)

Using social media and the art of conversation underpins the new economy, it is the foundation for the networking that is so important to the 21st century. Gone are the days of the advertiser here is the time of the value based marketer, the individual and business that adds value long before their customers and clients have begun to buy.

This new economy entrepreneur ‘gets it’; that working in line with the way the universe itself works will create a cogent alignment with the reality of primal chaos, the matrix from which all reality emerges and when you are working in line with the universe magic happens.

“The atom is the icon of the 20th century. The atom whirls alone. It is the metaphor for individuality. But the atom is the past. The symbol for the next century is the net. The net has no center, no orbits, no certainty. It is an indefinite web of causes. The net is the archetype displayed to represent all circuits, all intelligence, all interdependence, all things economic, social, or ecological, all communications, all democracy, all families, all large systems, almost all that we find interesting and important. Whereas the atom represents clean simplicity, the net channels messy complexity.”

In other words the new 21st Century icon is the quantum wave, where all, and I mean everything begins. Before there is an atom, the symbol of matter in the universe there is the wave of probability this is a scientific fact and that wave is representative of the new economy. The quantum wave is probability rather than certainties and it is the true essence of our universe, that wave of chaos (meaning primal soup out of which all matter comes) it is the matrix where all things are possible and yet nothing is certain unless and until it is defined by thought, belief or in our case the crowd in our communities and tribes on the internet.

The internet has changed our lives forever and now social media has changed things even more, we are not in the information age any more we are in the information sharing age and this means networking – building communities and creating tribes. Where information is shared, conversed about and agreed upon we have our realities, our certainties and our matter. Out of the primal chaos of the everchanging conversation on the world wide web we begin to see memes (viral conversations) around which we form tribes and communities.

This is where Fractal Magic Marketing comes into it’s own and meets the world of the online wave, it is only by interacting with full understanding of the new economy and the way waves of possibility and probablity work that we will learn how to marketing in this new economy.

Do you understand the rules of the new economy?

“The three great currents of the network economy: vast globalization, steady dematerialization into knowledge, and deep, ubiquitous networking–these three tides are washing over all shores. Their encroachment is steady, and self-reinforcing. Their combined effect can be rendered simply: The net wins…”

Are you marketing within the rules of the new economy? Using the laws of the universe to create memes from your marketing messages? Some clues are within this text:

“Networks are nurtured by making it as easy as possible to participate. The more diverse the players in your network–competitors, customers, associations, and critics–the better. Becoming a member should be a breeze. You want to know who your customers are, but you don’t want to make it hard for them to get to you (IDs, yes; passwords, no). You want to make it easy for your competitors to join too (all their customers could potentially be yours as well). Be open to the power of network effects: Relationships are more powerful than technical quality.”

Fractal Magic Marketing is the only marketing system that takes advantage of the scientificly applied laws of the universe via quantum wave theory, direct from a former secondary science teacher who turned online marketer extra-ordinaire.

“Unlike viral marketing, which grows enormously and then dies quickly, fractal marketing goes forever, repeating itself at every scale imaginable.”

“One of the most interesting things to note about Fractal Magick MarketingTM is that it is all about infinite growth that is built on the value of the product, service or brand, not the amount of hype created around it.”

“Fractal Magick MarketingTM is all about being totally authentic, giving loads of value, giving back and building your brand on those rock solid values.”

“Marketers should now be thinking and acting differently as humanity once again finds it’s voice and the power to create or destroy businesses, perhaps even nations through the power of social media and world-wide conversations.” (quotes from the Fractal Magic Marketing course – Stay tuned for more about the launch of this amazing system in the next few weeks – coming soon to a computer near you).

Swarms need real-time communication. Living systems don’t have the luxury of waiting overnight to process an incoming signal. If they had to sleep on it, they could die in their sleep. With few exceptions, nature reacts in real time.”

Another quote from a site called ‘New Economy Entrepreneurs‘ outlines the understandings you will need to participate easily in the new economy:

“The following list of names personify the essence of a New Economy Entrepreneur:

* Warren Buffett
* Ariana Huffington
* Oprah
* The Guy Who Runs the Koi Fusion Food Cart in Portland, Oregon

Okay, okay. You were with me until the last name on the list, weren’t you?

What does a local food cart guy possibly have in common with those other Big Famous People?

Simple.

1. He is someone who invests his energies into adding value to the world through his business ventures that reflect what he is passionate about (an entrepreneur);

AND…

2. He embraces the power of technology to get Big Things Done (in his case, he uses Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter to attract a loyal customer base who eventually creates a “buzz” about his business and grows his profits for him — the epitome of new economy tools).

In fact, Social Media has allowed this man to take his business from one cart to five, all in less than a year’s time! There is no other way he could have grown as quickly had it not been for the Internet. Of course, once the buzz about his scrumptious multi-cultural tacos was flying all over Facebook and Twitter feeds, the local news media picked up his story and ran a couple of human interest pieces on him and his business, only adding exponentially to his customer base because people saw him on TV.

Thus, a New Economy Entrepreneur is someone who engages in businesses* he or she owns that:

* reflect his or her passions
* add value to the world
* capitalize on the power of the Internet to multiply efforts, improve efficiency, and increase profits.

*Note emphasis on the plural of business — businesses. I point this out because it is critical to understanding what a New Economy Entrepreneur is. NEE are never one-dimensional. Having multiple streams of income is an essential component of the overall definition, just like chocolate chips are an essential part of chocolate chip cookies.”

The Zen Bull team have taken this to heart and are so excited to reveal our new sites which are to form a trio of sites along with The Zen Bull, to give an wholistic experience to those who are interested in learning more about being their authentic selves, revealing their own magnificence to the world and interacting with those who are on the same path.

So sit back and enjoy this post and gain some inights into the characteristics of some of the most prolific social media personality types:

The Puppy - the total newbie to social media, this personality type makes mistakes however they are endearing and learn from watching other more experienced personalities. When you meet a newbie it is a good idea to be a little patient with them until they learn the etiquette, when they make a mistake because they have been watching and modelling their comments on the ‘wrong’ type, guidance is the best option until they learn the ropes.

The Chihuahua - This personality type yaps often and yet seems to say very little, there is no substance, rhyme or reason for their tweets and posts they can be seen typing things like: “sitting watching tv and chillin’ with ma bro” or the classic “gotta go pee” Yapping all day long about nothing in particular trying to get noticed.

The Miniature Poodle - These posts can be classified as sickly sweet, this SM personality like quotes and fires them off one after the other in quick succession and has little or nothing to say at all other than “I just love my life” etc.. , again no real substance or conversation. This is the cream puff of the social media world again nothing of real substance however occasionally they post a quote worth reposting or retweeting.

The Doberman – now this SM personality is all business and no nonsence, they are there to advertise their product, service and brand and do not bother with any real world conversation. Their posts are characterised by no-nonsence marketing which is often sent out via autobot so they don’t have to bother replying or conversing at all. The all business character of the SM universe and often blocked by me even though I too market online.

The Mongrel – it is interesting what types are attracted to social media and this type loves to bad mouth others, cause trouble and gossip, they will find any user and treat them to a post denegrating their personality, looks, and posts in a rude and uncouth manner and are best blocked at your earliest conventience for good. Obviously have no other way to gain the fame they seek and have a bad attitude.

The Basset Hound - this type tells you every little thing about their lives, they are often looking for sympathy and they post pathetic comments and tweets hoping that you will be reeled into their lives in a way that you will feel you need to help them in some way. This creates the very attention that they crave. They love playing the victim and often ask for help in ways that are downright rude “I am so low at the moment the only way I feel better is when I write my story, I cannot type and so really need someone to buy me a voice recorder – this is the one I want LINK” (a real post I saw on my Facebook wall recently)

The German Shepherd - now this personality is worth knowing, although they are there for business they also understand the need to converse and be social on social media, they will openly edify other businesses and people and are up for a cross marketing opportunity or two. They often post items of interest from all over the web and are generally business-like and social at the same time.

The Golden Retreiver – This social media personality truly gets social media, they create relationships and friendships at the same time as cultivating their business and marketing relationships. They will openly post about their life while not becoming completely boring and are great at cross marketing with those they are ‘friends’ with, even their direct competition, understanding that competition is only an untapped market. Look for the Golden Retrievers they are focussed on creating great relationships and helping you to become successful as they understand that reciprocity is a key component of social media.

Why should you care about appearing smart on Twitter? Because the people who hire, promote, fire, date, marry, and divorce you will all read your tweets (updates) at some point.

http://mashable.com/2010/03/19/facebook-fan-engagement/
there are many brands who’ve surpassed the one million fan mark, while their peers have languished in the thousands. What’s their secret? These companies have figured out how to move from “broadcast” mode into engagement. They have engaged people so well that their fans even invite others along for the ride.

http://mashable.com/2010/03/19/global-social-media-usage/
According to the Nielsen Company, the global average time spent per person on social networking sites is now nearly five and half hours per month (February 2010 data), with Facebook accounting for the majority of that time.

http://www.jenniearmato.com/blog/general/viral-marketing-facebook-game-game
What’s the REAL SECRET POWER OF FACEBOOK? Well you would be right if you said 1) the number of people that go there, 2) the number of connections you can make 3) the networking you can do or 4) the entertainment apps. Each one of these has something I call ‘gravitational pull’ – like gravity, they pull you towards them and make you want to stay, but they are not the Secret to viral marketing on Facebook.

http://socialmediarockstar.com/how-to-build-a-massive-online-community
Josh shares tips for building an online community and tells how he grew the site to almost 50,000 members:

http://www.allfacebook.com/2010/03/facebook-the-tool-of-big-brother/
If you’ve been up to “no good,” you might want to think twice about who you ‘friend’ on Facebook and other social media sites, because there just might be a government official trying to track you down. The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has been collecting information on how a variety of U.S. federal agencies are fighting crime using Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networks.

http://mashable.com/2010/03/18/social-media-sites-data/
Twitterers mostly consume news, MySpace users want games and entertainment, Facebookers are into both news and community and Digg’s audience has a mixed bag of interests.

http://www.personalbrandingblog.com/legitimizing-your-lackluster-linkedin/
Over the last few years LinkedIn has evolved to play a central role in professional networking and relationship building. I’ve come to find it very disappointing when I see a profile that looks like it was thrown together in 20 minutes, doesn’t have much thought put in to it, or is clearly overdue for an update.

http://staynalive.com/articles/2010/03/18/facebook-goes-after-their-trademark-in-popular-domains/
It has long been known that Facebook Apps are not to have the name “Facebook” in their names, but it would appear that Facebook is starting to go after domain names too. Just recently, they have asked such major sites as Mari Smith’s WhyFacebook.com, to change their name in defense of their own Trademark.

There are loads of different ways to use Twitter to enhance your social media marketing, I must admit I like the ones that make my life easier either by simplifying it in some way or by providing a time effective solution to my busy day.

This list of Twitter apps and sites and some of my hints on how I use them, will provide you with some ideas on how to do the same for your busy social media calendars:

Twitter Widgets and Downloads Page: A list right on Twitter itself of Twitter apps and widgets you can use to streamline your Twittering, and use to update other profiles like Facebook and Friendfeed.

Tweetbubble: This app allows you to record a short message via video and place it right on your Twitter profile where it will play anytime a user check out your profile.

Selective Twitter to Facebook: Now this one is not a link, but it is one of the handiest things I can tell you about linking your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Many people use the Twitter widget for this however this results in what I term as an unsightly mess as all your Tweet end up willy nilly on your Facebook profile which can be quite annoying on other peoples walls and if you are a prolific Tweeter can also result in your overstepping the boundaries of Facebook protocol and getting yourself blocked, or banned.

How to make only selected Tweets appear in your Facebook wall: in Facebook either on your Profile or preferably your Fan Page go to Notes (if you are on your FB Fan Page first go into Edit page and look for the Notes app in your list) once there you will hopefully find a link that says “Import Blog” now open your Twitter profile page and look for “Favorites” click on it and this will take you to your favorites page (hopefully you have favorites some items along the way).

Now hover your mouse over the RSS link on the lower right hand area of your Twitter Favorites page a link should appear on the bottom toolbar, copy this link (I had to use pen and paper , now go back to Facebook and paste that link into the URL of your Import Blog page. If you have done this correctly another page will appear which asks you if this is the feed you wish to import. Click on “Import Blog”

Now when you want a selected Tweet to appear automagically on your FB Wall all you need to do is Favorite it and it stops the cluttering of your wall and those of your friends with loads of useless information!

Now that is handy!

One question I get asked quite a lot about is whether there is any way to track your Social Media Marketing success. The short answer is Yes! although in the next breath I have to explain that it is done in a different way to your ‘other’ marketing. Would you like to know how?

* Google Analytics: First of all, let’s not forget Google Analytics, this wonderful free tool by Google still has it’s place. by setting up some pages to be tracked and then only using those for your Social Media you can see what is working and what is not – yes you really can split test your social media. Try this and see: set up two pages with similar, but not the same content or even (of you have the ability two smaller sites), now set those pages or sites up in Google Analytics and use different types of social media – for instance only Twitter for one and Facebook for the other, or try different types of marketing content and posts to market those sites. Easy!

* Twitter Stats: Other than site stats try these Twitter trackers Twitalyzer, TweetStats, Twinfluence, Twitter Analyzer, Tweet Effect, and BackTweets. All of these work a little differently and give you different types of results, but the effect is an all round picture of your social marketing on Twitter. there is a new site called Klout.com which is also very useful for figuring out your reach and influence on Twitter, it is in open Beta right now, so give this one a go.
* Facebook Stats: If you market on Facebook and haven’t got a Facebook Fan Page you are missing out on your Facebook Insights which comes with every business profile/page. These have several views and some very noteworthy information for Admins, including how many people are interacting with your page, whether there are more male or females, how many people clicked your links and more..

* URL Shorteners: many of the better URL shorteners are now incorporating tracking your link stats for free when you sign up for an account. Most noteable are: bit.ly, budurl, and ow.ly from HootSuite. Not only will these shorten your links to a more managable size they will provide link tracking stats which are invaluable to check what kind of posts people are clicking on most. You can then change your comment and post strategy to take advantage of your insights. Personally I use bit.ly and ow.ly more often than not, as I like using HootSuite and bit.ly is available on Seesmic my Twitter App of choice. I have a new one I am testing out from Stumbleupon called su.pr and it seems to be working out as well and best of all there is a Worpress Plugin for it too.

Whatever you use, and I suggest for a complete picture you take a look at most of these, one way to track your social media influence and success is the conversations people are having with you. How much interaction there is, how many people comment on your links, or ask questions of your as the expert in your niche. Don’t forget that social media is social and understanding that this is a key component of your social media tracking and insights.

Have fun!

Have you seen them? If you are on Twitter I know you have.

You know the posts that tell you how to join this site and add 5 Million new followers!!

Are you tempted? Ask yourself why?

Now as an online marketer I understand that “it’s all in the list” and a list can be a list of social media followers, friends and fans.. BUT! Yes there is a big BUT and not the kind you want to shake (as in booty) lol.

and here is BUT # 1. What good is it to have a list of 5 million followers who all just want to sell their products to you? These people have their own agenda, they want to sell you on their product or opportunity they are not usually buyers.

BUT # 2. If you are making real, authentic connections and you are passionate, really passionate about what you do or sell the right poeple will be immediately attracted to you and you will have a list of people who trust you, listen to you and ultimately buy.

BUT # 3. When you give value to your friends and followers they know you are trustworthy, they know you know your stufff and they will follow (yes really, actually follow) your recommendations to them.

BUT # 4. Ask yourself why you need so many followers or friends, if you have no connection with these people, you do not know them or what they are looking for or what they need or want, why do you want them to follow you?

BUT # 5. Ask yourself, what if you could get people to follow you without following them first? What if you waited for them to find you, for them to optin to friending or following you, wouldn’t that mean they have chosen you and therefore have made a decision about you and what you have to offer and wouldn’t that mean that more of those people are ready not just to listen to you, but follow your lead? Wouldn’t this mean that most of those who made a decision to follow or friend you are not just prospects, BUT qualified prospects?

BUT # 6. Don’t you think that joining and recommending these sites makes you look a little desperate?

I am a social media marketer, and not once have I followed more than a few people a week (not a day even), and my followings have always grown more from people opting to follow me than the other way around. I love this, it might seem slower but trust me the type of friend or follower you have is a higher quality, you might even make some really great friends (as I have) make some amazing business JV’s (as I have) and gather new clients (as I have) without all the madness.

Social Media is easy, it is not about “the one with the biggest following wins” it is about “those who create the most connections and have the most real conversations win” and it is a win for all. It is not about having the biggest audience it is about who is willing to listen to you and click on your links.

Nothing can beat being real, giving value and creating relationships – think about it word of mouth is only any good if you trust the source.

Be a trusted source.
